Ordering Pizza in 2019

Operator: “Thank you for calling Pizza Hut. May I have your…”

Customer: “Hi, I’d like to order.”

Operator: “May I have your NIDN first, sir?”

Customer: “My National ID Number, yeah, hold on, eh, it’s 6102049998-45-54610.”

Operator: “Thank you, Mr. Sheehan. I see you live at 42 Meadow Drive, and the phone number is 01234 56789. Your office number over at Lincoln Insurance is 01324 098765 and your mobile number is 07987 777878. Which number are you calling from, sir?”

why wi-fi?

With the realisation that we can get cheap wireless broadband (not a wireless adsl router) for the new house here comes another timely link:

USB adaptors & DIY antenna = “Poor Man’s WiFi"?

That’ll be using a Chinese vat scoop and a USB adaptor to make a long-range system then…

Woman At Farscape Convention Has Dangerously Inflated Self-Image

“Let’s face it, Paulette is pretty ordinary,” Martin said, reviewing a tape of Osley’s participation in a convention trivia contest Monday. “I mean, she’s cute and all, but the men at ScaperCon treated her like she was [Farscape actress] Raelee Hill. Going from being someone who might get hit on once or twice a year to the belle of the ball and then back to nothing again, all within four days? It could be damaging to Paulette’s long-term mental health.”

The Devil makes work for… yadda… yadda… yadda…

Idle Thumbs

“It’s only a matter of time for people to get completely apathetic towards the way they’ve been trained to think about games, and start to hunger for something a bit different. I, for one, am jaded as hell. With Idle Thumbs I hope to turn my boredom into something positive. We’re going to totally de-boreify the gaming landscape… starting today!!! Okay, those are delusions of grandeur. But it’s a start. At the very least, it will help restore my sanity.

Welcome aboard. You’re one of us now.”

OS X… on Linux?

It certainly looks legit enough, sitting as it does on a sourceforge site: a architecture independent PowerPC emulator. Which means you can install OS X on it. On your Intel or AMD box.

Now what if you installed PearPC within CoLinux…?

But how to keep the beer cold?

The jet powered beer cooler

“What follows is my story about a shed, a warm beer and a home made jet engine. It is being presented for entertainment purposes only and no-one should attempt to emulate what I have done here.”

shakes fist at sky whilst screaming “have you never heard of the inverse square law!”

For anal film goers everywhere:

INSULTINGLY STUPID MOVIE PHYSICS

Not only generically bad physics (exploding cars, sparking bullets, etc), but also individual film reviews (such as The Hulk).

Man, is that first line is going to bring in some bad search referrers…

the future’s bright…

Two choice quotes from a Netcraft interview with Brian Behlendorf, co-founder of the Apache Web Server Project and the first Chief Engineer at Wired Magazine:

“That’s one of the beauties of the managed-services model: you set up an agreement, customers pay monthly based on usage with some baseline, and so long as you live up to your service level agreements and continue to improve the product over time, your revenue numbers become dependable and predictable.”

“Meanwhile, we’ve not forgotten our open source roots. We chose a hybrid model (like most software companies who contribute to open source projects) whereby much of the underpinning is stuff we give away, and we sell the layer on top that enterprises care about. Subversion has been our high note for the last two years in this space - it hit a 1.0 release in February to a lot of acclaim. As we move “up the stack” in what we do, look for possibly more projects in the future.”
