crossing the event horizon

Put out the cat, book a week off work, give up on achieving anything in the near future:

OkCupid

It’s going to suck up all your free time. Like a black hole.

a third or two-thirds?

I have had far too many arguments with people over the “whilst on a quiz show pick a door from three then the host shows a non winning door and asks if you want to change your mind” problem and whether it is better to switch or stick with the same choice. Some have argued that your odds change if you switch, others say you still have a 1/3 chance. Finally there’s a page on the Internet I can point to and use the time to something more productive. Like sleep.

CoLinux

Forget all the cynical fanboy noise on slashdot about CoLinux; instead read the Metafilter thread, more specifically this comment by eeffugas for the full details on how this craziness actually works.

Potentially, one of the really cool things about CoLinux will be the ability to debug Windows, at a core level, from within a Unix environment, since as a Ring 0 process CoLinux will have as full access to the underlying environment as Windows itself.

Of course, all the DRM folks just had a heart attack :-)

How to be a programmer

Only a quarter through it but it’s a fantastic read: How to be a Programmer: A Short, Comprehensive, and Personal Summary

“There is a lot of room for miscommunication about estimates, as people have a startling tendency to think wishfully that the sentence:

I estimate that, if I really understand the problem, it is about 50% likely that we will be done in five weeks (if no one bothers us during that time).

really means:

I promise to have it all done five weeks from now. “

- Why Estimation is Important
