paedophilia is this season’s terrorism
The press seem to be getting themselves in a bit of a lather over Microsoft’s decision to close all their msn chat rooms (except in a handful of countries). What they all seem to be missing is that the only countries that will continue to have access to msn chat rooms are those that msn subscriptions are available, i.e. money making countries. For the rest of the world it is simply an easy way to kill of a money losing enterprise, and yet somehow they have also managed to get the level of publicity (as so called ‘news‘ items) that money just could not buy.

children never listen to their parents
An emailed question from Rich, my house mate.
=====
who said this:
“To occupy Iraq would instantly shatter our coalition, turning the whole Arab world against us and make a broken tyrant into a latter-day hero … assigning young soldiers to a fruitless hunt for a securely entrenched dictator and condemning them to fight in what would be an un-winnable urban guerilla war. It could only plunge that part of the world into even greater instability.”

ICFP comp
The International Conference on Functional Programming have just completed running their annual programming contest for this year and what an interesting challenge it was. Give a simple mathematical model for a race car and a handful of tracks the challenge was to direct the car round the track in the shortest lap time (measured in time steps). The biggest factor in this competition was that teams only had three days in which to complete and submit their results.
The winner was a lone programmer with 16 dual xeon machines though the judges also awarded a prize to a team who had a novel approach of computer assisted manual driving (and were still close to the winners with their lap times).

spam? {an update}
My brother points out that Wired tracked down the originator of the time traveller spam, and that at least one enterprising recipient has set themselves up as an online second hand flux capacitor shop.
